Beach Reporter’s Paul Silva: “Challenges Facing Community Newspapers”
On May 16th Paul Silva will discuss the challenges facing community newspapers, such as the Beach Reporter (and the Easy Reader), in today’s media environment. These “free” weekly newspapers depend almost entirely upon advertising revenue for their survival. They are our primary source for the news (both good and bad) of Manhattan, Hermosa, and Redondo Beaches, and the surrounding communities. Only a small portion of our local news is covered by the Daily Breeze, and even less by the LA Times. For example, only these two weekly newspapers attend and report on our local city council meetings. Paul has been with the BR since its founding four decades ago, and will answer your questions, including about our local history.Paul is a graduate of Mira Costa High School and UCLA. He has remained a freelance writer for the Beach Reporter, keeping us smiling with his warm and personal articles. All ages are welcome. We begin at 8:30 AM virtually at zoom.us/j/3103723898 You will have the option of downloading a Zoom app or attending via your web browser (detailed instructions here).
