Ash Wednesday ServiceAll Events
February 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
We will be live streaming a worship service for Ash Wednesday on February 17 at 7:00 pm. This is the beginning of the season of Lent and will be the first day that our Lenten devotionals will be available. We will have printed copies available inside the sanctuary door nearest the office for you to pick up. We will also have a printable PDF file you can download and print yourself, as well as an online devotion you can visit at the church website. This will be set up in the same manner as our virtual Advent calendar.
A major part of this special worship service is the imposition of the ashes. Ashes traditionally remind us of our mortality and are a sign of morning for the sins of the world. This year we are asking members to prepare their own ashes at home. The most traditional way to make ashes is to burn the branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. This year, we have a simple and meaningful do-it-yourself version. Take a regular piece of paper and write down something you want to leave behind this year. It may be something in yourself you want to change, it may be something you need to let go of to move forward in life, it may be something that we all need to let go of for the sake of a better world. When you’ve done this, burn the paper. This should be done at least an hour before the worship service so the ashes will be cool. You can use them dry or else mix them with a few drops of water or scented oil. If you’re adding water or oil do it shortly before the service begins so the paste it makes will not dry out. Then, we will all be ready to share in this ritual of our faith. I hope you will all participate in our Ash Wednesday worship.
