The Transfiguration is the story from Mark's Gospel for Sunday, February 19th. The mountaintop is usually representative of a great spiritual experience, the kind which gives us goose bumps and maybe even tears. Join the worshipping congregation on February 19th in following this striking story of Jesus, three of his disciples, and two of his spiritual ancestors. Pause and reflect for few moments how a spiritual experience might inform us, and sometimes mislead us. Here at Manhattan Beach Community Church, you are welcome.
The story of Jesus' encounter with the leper out of Mark's Gospel is surprising and even startling. Mark, the storyteller, is in fine form as there are significant twists and turns in these short, terse five verses. Come and join the worshipping congregation to consider all of the power and complications of being "Out-ed." And remember, no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey you are welcome here. Scripture Reading: Mark 1: 4- - 45
Mark's gospel is set against a cosmic backdrop of the struggle of good versus evil. We experience those powerful forces in our lives today. This Sunday we will consider Mark's take on this as we gather together around the celebration of Holy Communion. All are welcome around God's Table in our community of faith. No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here! Scripture Reading: Mark 1: 29 - 39
In the New Testament church at Corinth, Paul has found a congregation of worldly, sophisticated people who seem to seldom agree. This week the squabble is over what one can eat, in good conscience, in community with others. Ever the good teacher and pastor, Paul pushes the conversation to a deeper one around the subject of what one does (or doesn't do) for the sake of love for another in the congregation. Come and join in the conversation. See you in church Sunday! Scripture Reading - 1Corinthians 8:1-13
Jesus calls us to radical discipleship, and sometimes this can be unnerving. This kind of following requires a turn, a shift, in our thinking and our being. Consider together with the gathered congregation the first steps in this path. It doesn't matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you can make the shift with us! Come and worship! Scripture: Mark 1: 14 - 20
Dr. Barbara Brown Zigmund will be our guest in the pulpit on January 15. She is the author of "Hidden Histories of the United Church of Christ" and a widely respected and well-know professor of Church History. Her scriptures for the morning will be Hebrew scriptures, Samuel 3:1-20 and Psalm 139. Dr. Zikmund is not only a skilled teacher and accomplished scholar, but also an engaging speaker with great stories to tell about our faith tradition.
Rev. Erin Wyma will deliver the morning message entitled, "What's Old is New Again." Her scripture will be Ephesians 3:1-12.
Lindsey Jacobs' scripture reading on January 1, 2012 will be, Romans 8:24-25.
Christmas is full of surprises! The intentional interim minister, Michael Obenauer, and the organist, Lee Lassetter, invite you to worship at MBCC on Sunday morning, December 25th, (Christmas Day) and to be ready for surprises -- wonderful ones! We will celebrate that morning God's Greatest Surprise . . . coming to humankind in the Babe of Bethlehem! No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here -- God Is Still Speaking!
Because the Fourth Sunday in Advent is all about Love, the sermon will explore how the coming of God in Christ is all about Love. Come and celebrate in worship the God whose very personaliity is Love . . . love for humanity, love for what God has created, love in the Christ Child! Come, whoever you are and whereever you are on life's journey! Come and worship as we journey together to Bethlehem! Scripture: Luke 1: 26 - 38
New members will also be received this day during the morning worship service.
